I led the experience redesign of the long-standing Materials Wall exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre. The installation has traditionally served as an atmospheric, space-defining feature, but offered little opportunity for visitor engagement. My role focused on researching and refreshing the material tiles to showcase current stories in materials science innovation, while introducing new interactive elements that invite visitors to explore in a more hands-on way.
As part of the Materials Wall renewal, I updated the 2’×2’ tiles to feature materials that highlight sustainability, innovation, and problem-solving in contemporary materials science. I also designed a “sample collage” to showcase rare or small-scale materials that couldn’t be fabricated as full tiles. Working with graphic designers, I helped develop a touchscreen experience that allows visitors to learn the science, stories, and applications behind every material on the wall.
I also designed sliding panels that invite visitors to uncover the fascinating origin stories behind these innovative materials. Such stories include Sea Sone, a concrete alternative made of waste seashells, or Piñatex, a leather alternative made of discarded pineapple leaf fibres.
